Will work for food

Poor Seth.
In his younger days he was a very good sheepdog. We would trailer sheep into the desert and work all day. He could go out as far as I needed him to and bring me sheep. He would work his heart out trying to put them back into the bed of my truck when we were done. He would work exhaust or set out at trials and give it his all. We worked on a ranch for a while where he really showed his intelligence and good sense when retrieving sheep that had broke down fence and got away. Seth loves work more than anything else in life, like a good Border Collie should.
Now that I'm unmarried and been trying to put my life back together so I have some sort of retirement when the time comes, I don't have the time or means to work the dogs. Seth hasn't really worked sheep in a couple years now.
So I gave him a job today. Its raining and thundering outside, which he hates and I wanted to get his mind off it. So I found him some work. Being the dedicated and conscientious worker that he is, no job is beneath him or too demeaning.

Even working chickens in a basement.

Of course he did require a little help with this large flock.

Seth really did have a good time though. One of the chickens broke off from the flock and headed into the mess of my stuff, jumping up on various chairs etc that are being stored. Seth did his best to coax her down before she went under the stairs. She actually hopped off her roost and onto Seth's back before jumping back down onto the floor. Seth never missed a beat and never moved till she she was off his back, then he just pushed her back with the others.
Such a comedown for a good sheepdog, Sorry Seth but its the best I can do for you right now.

After my blog last week concerning the grooming of Seth and my making the statement that I hardly ever brush and/or bath Seth, he went and rolled in something very stinky and I did have to bath him. Seth absolutely hates baths, always has.

But he does clean up nice and fluffy!

And he never holds a grudge!

  1. His distant cousin Bob used to be a good chicken dog too but decided a couple of months ago that they are now beneath him. The good news is that by the end of our trip he went mostly deaf. He can hear somethings still but no longer can he hear thunder! It's actually a relief to have a noise sensitive dog go deaf.

  2. aww..I'm sad to hear about Bob going deaf, even if it is a good thing in one way. Seth and Meg are both noise/thunder sensitive. It is a real pain dealing with it. Crue will startle at a loud noise (air compressor/nail gun) but then he will immediately go see what it is.
I'm sure Seth would feel chickens were beneath him too if he had sheep..LOL He hated working ducks except to exhaust them at trials.

  3. I keep saying this - but Seth doesn't look that old! He's just covered in puppy fluff - gorgeous!

  4. Seth doesn't act his age either. He is the oldest of my 5 Border Collies but he acts the youngest and has more energy than the others. Don't tell the other ones, but he's smarter too...

  5. You know, I am still having problems with Jock's sound sensitivity and being here in Yellow Pine, the thunderstorms are incredible! The sound reverberates for awhile through the canyon and is almost always on top of us!! Fionn has no issues with noises unless it's a gun! Needless to say, he won't go elk/wolf hunting with me this year! lolol
